Why Avowed Is The Most Worth Trying Action RPG In 2025?

Avowed is a new action RPG scheduled to be launched on February 18, 2025. Once announced, it attracted the attention of most players. So why is Avowed so worth looking forward to? Let's analyze it from multiple aspects.

Here we want to talk about Avowed, the new action RPG from Obsidian Entertainment that is scheduled to be released on February 18, 2025. If you are one of those people who feels that most modern RPGs don’t engage you as much as the old games did, and sometimes you get tired of replaying old games repeatedly, then you might be interested in this new game. So why do I think it has the potential to be one of the best RPGs? Let’s take a look!

Background And Trailer

Avowed is an RPG set in the world of Eora, which is the setting of Pillars of Eternity game. Emperor of Aedyr sends the player character as an emissary to Living Lands to find out the truth about a soul plague called Dream Scourge, find out its cause and stop it.

However, our character will also come into contact with other characters, and these characters are likely to represent factions. In the story trailer, we hear the voice of Emperor, whose perspective we already know is that Dream Scourge must be stopped at all costs.

Why Avowed Is The Most Worth Trying Action RPG In 2025?

Another important character is Inquisitor Lodwyn, a returning character from Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. She sees Scourge as a symptom of a bigger problem, a symbol of greater chaos, disunity, and destructiveness at the heart of Living Lands.

Finally, we hear the voice of Giatta, one of the possible companions, who believes that chaos is part of who we are and what makes Living Lands special. Her perspective is to embrace chaos, cherish it, and take care of it.

As with all Obsidian RPGs, we will be able to decide what we think is the right way to deal with this plague and make things right in Living Lands, taking part in shaping the future of the region and its inhabitants. In these games, you can approach quests in different ways, ally with certain factions, and have a reputation with factions that affect your experience interacting with NPCs in various regions.

Gameplay

In terms of gameplay, we get to switch to first and third-person perspectives, rather than the party-based isometric style of Pillars of Eternity. First and third-person perspective games tend to be more immersive from a visual perspective, as characters appear larger on the screen, which helps one feel closer to them.

For combat, Avowed has an easy-to-understand combat system. There are enough meaningful choices you can make to create a character build that fits your play style, while also allowing you to combine your abilities with each other and with companion abilities. The magic gives a delicate sense of fantasy, and it’s balanced, at least from a visual perspective.

Exploration

In terms of exploration, they seem to be taking more advantage of the verticality of 3D space. Of course, if you’re switching from isometric to 3D, it’s great to take advantage of all the extras that 3D has to offer.

Areas in Avowed are designed in a more open way, allowing players to approach objectives through a variety of paths. What we are not sure about is whether the areas we can explore will be completely open, or whether there will be loading screens between certain areas, or some parts may be blocked until we reach a certain part of the story. Of course, I am completely fine with locking some areas for story reasons, as long as it makes sense in the game. However, I also want a fairly open world that we can explore at any time, even if some areas may be very dangerous for low-level characters.

I believe that every player likes to have the option to explore a certain place, even if it is not the best path, because it provides more opportunities for role-playing. Although these choices may take our Avowed Account in a completely different direction, we can also try to come up with creative solutions to overcome challenges.

It would feel bad if the game restricted the areas you can explore too much, especially compared to the variety of choices you can make in the quests.

Why Is Avowed Worth Looking Forward To?

We have been trying to figure out why Avowed attracted so much attention when it was announced, and besides the obvious cool setting and Obsidian RPGs label, it is more because it reminds us of Morrowind.

You are sent to an island full of bad weather, monsters, hard-to-reach valleys, and weird happenings, and more importantly, you are a stranger, an interloper, an outsider, meddling in the affairs of the locals and will eventually have the power to shape the future of the region.

There has never been a game quite like Morrowind, and if Obsidian can succeed in creating the atmosphere that made Morrowind still so beloved after all these years, I think they will be an enormous success.

All in all, from what I have seen so far, Avowed seems to have a great story, setting, and gameplay. Only time will tell if my opinion remains the same, though. Anyway, these are my thoughts on Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming RPG, Avowed. See you next time!
