WoW Forever Shadow Gems Guide: Best Farming Methods and Uses
In the current WoW Forever, the role of Shadow Gems has become increasingly significant. In this article, I will explain why they are so highly valued by players and how you can go about obtaining them.
WoW Forever officially launched on November 4th, and players are undoubtedly hard at work leveling up and strengthening their characters. During this time, many have discovered that Shadow Gems play an exceptionally important role in the game—leading everyone to ask: how can I get more of them? In this article, I'll explain why Shadow Gems are so essential and the various ways you can acquire them.
The Role of Shadow Gems
Even during WoW Forever beta, players quickly realized that this item holds incredible value. If you didn't participate in the beta, take note: do not simply sell your Shadow Gems to an NPC! Here is why they are so important.
Crafting Gear
With the addition of a wide range of craftable gear in WoW Classic+, many players are choosing professions like Tailoring or Leatherworking to create low-level blue-quality (rare) items. While the other materials required for these items are common, every single one of them—without exception—requires Shadow Gems, and in large quantities, too.
You might be wondering: do you really have to rely on gear you've crafted yourself?
As you level up, crafting your own gear is often the most convenient way to gear up during the early stages of the game. The materials are easy to come by, and each item typically requires about 8 Shadow Gems to craft.
More importantly, the stats on these crafted items are exceptionally strong—they provide a massive boost to your character's power, making them more than capable of handling most of the enemies you'll encounter early on.
Economic Investment
As mentioned, many players rely on crafted gear. Since all of this gear requires Shadow Gems, there is actually a hidden opportunity here to earn WoW Forever gold. Before reaching level 20, most players are primarily focused on leveling up and often overlook the importance of gear—after all, the early-game monsters are quite easy to handle. During this phase, you can easily purchase Shadow Gems from Auction House at a low price.
Once most players hit level 20, the game's difficulty begins to ramp up. Players start paying closer attention to their equipment and weapon choices, often turning to crafting—which leads to a massive surge in the demand for Shadow Gems. If you check Auction House at this point, you'll notice the price climbing higher and higher.
Therefore, your best move is to acquire as many Shadow Gems as you can before the price skyrockets; given the current trend, the demand is only set to increase.
How to Obtain Shadow Gems
In WoW Classic+, Shadow Gems are not particularly rare, and there are several ways to obtain them. Below, I'll outline the various methods for acquiring this material.
Defeating Monsters
The most direct way to obtain them is by defeating monsters. While you could farm them in open world, the drop rate there is generally quite low.
Instead, I recommend farming inside dungeons. Dungeons are packed with elite monsters that offer a much better drop rate. I suggest checking out the following locations:
- Ruins of Lordaeron
- Wailing Caverns
- Shadowfang Keep
- Deadmines
These dungeons are great sources for Shadow Gems. However, some players may struggle to clear these instances, so be sure to prepare thoroughly for combat before heading in. If you find it too difficult to farm efficiently within a dungeon, sticking to open world is a safer, more reliable alternative.
Fishing
Since not everyone may be able to manage combat-heavy methods mentioned above, I also recommend trying your hand at fishing in WoW Classic+ to obtain Shadow Gems.
By fishing at various pools or spots, you can catch a wide range of items, such as Bloated Mud Snappers, Catfish, and more. In addition, you can obtain Tightly Sealed Trunks, which may contain Shadow Gems.
If you are playing as a Night Elf, I recommend the following locations:
- Darkshore
- Barrens
- Loch Modan
- Westfall
These areas offer open, unobstructed views, making them ideal for fishing. More importantly, you can find floating wreckage along the coastlines, which may contain Tightly Sealed Trunks—significantly increasing your chances of acquiring Shadow Gems.
Mining
Yes, you can also obtain Shadow Gems through mining. However, if your sole purpose for mining is to acquire this item, the efficiency is quite low.
According to feedback from WoW Forever players, you might spend tens of minutes mining before seeing one or two drop; it's more of a lucky bonus than a reliable source. Therefore, I do not recommend mining as a primary method for obtaining Shadow Gems.
Pickpocket
If you are playing as a Rogue in WoW Forever, you should definitely learn Pickpocket skill. It allows you to secure extra loot from enemies—including, of course, Shadow Gems.
In my view, many Rogue players miss out on a significant amount of WoW Forever gold simply by failing to use this skill consistently. Regardless of which combat abilities you use, try to weave Pickpocket into your attack sequence; you'll typically be able to successfully swipe loot during the engagement. Once you've mastered the timing, items will end up in your inventory before you even see a loot window appear.
In short, Shadow Gems are highly valuable in the current version of WoW Forever. Don't be too quick to sell them off just because they seem easy to come by. The methods for obtaining them have been clearly outlined here—give them a try in-game, and you'll surely be able to collect plenty of Shadow Gems with ease.
